Abandoned West Penn Railway Street Car Line Allison to Brownsville Pennsylvania

The West Penn Railways served the coal and coke mining industry until its final run in August 1952. The Brownsville spur from Uniontown was not travelled as often, and at times went through remote right of ways. There was a large trestle that spanned the Century Mine area between Allison and Brownsville and then it came into a historic 1700's old area of Brownsville at Sixth Ave and Front Street, the original Rt 40 national road. Take a ride back in time and imagine the click clack of a streetcar!!

Great video, brings back memories. Dad, cousin Jim and I rode round-trip Brownsville-Uniontown in July/August 1949. I was 10 at the time, didn't know the rarity of what we were doing, or that abandonment was only a few months away! I recall the motorman, when he stopped at the long trestle of which you speak on the way to Uniontown saying to Jim and me ... "You want off here??" We didn't. I do remember the Mill Road/6th Ave. turnoff to private ROW from old US40 - now Spring St.? More later

Wow that's really neat. Really steep too. Steeper than I would have thought for street car traffic. We drove all around the castle last fourth of July. I get a kick out of watching all of these videos. Thanks for saving the information that could be lost forever.

Coke ovens took coal, cooked it for 48-72 hours and made a charcoal like substance that burned cleaner and hotter...it was the critical component of Andrew Carnegies Steel Industry in the late 19th Century thru World War II

Too bad you couldn't have got a better shot of that wild house. Also, there was a quick glimpse of a caboose. Former depot?
